Roadblocks & Barriers

Success. What does it take to “get there”? What does “success” mean to you?

Defining what our goals are is very aligned with the thoughts and discussions relative to the “new year” - I see you 2020 Nutrition Goals! But taking a step back and looking at what potential barriers might cause a change in your 2020 plans, potential roadblocks or even areas where you have struggled in the past is vital to establish a plan of action to overcome any barriers that might pop up in your journey.

What are roadblocks?

Just like goals are unique and individualized, roadblocks and barriers can also be very individualized. One person’s barrier might not be relevant to a teammate - and that’s ok! What’s important is defining these roadblocks as early as you can, establishing a set plan to enact when these barriers do arise and know that a setback or pause is just that - not a reason to quit or step down from a major goal. Roadblocks also can be ways to grow and find strength in a new challenge. Not all barriers are bad! Change is a part of life, and so are challenges. It’s ultimately how we form these challenges to make us stronger that can set us apart in reaching or exceeding our goals.

Let’s put this into practice.

Example:

Goal 1: Practice balance with upcoming celebrations and parties while nourishing my body with the fuel it needs to perform on a daily basis

Potential Roadblock: Peers influencing food/drink decisions while eating out/celebrating

Potential Plan: Bring a dish to share and plan to have a healthy snack ahead of time, but anticipate enjoying a favorite food/drink in moderation, not depriving but providing an opportunity to implement balance and not restriction.

Considering the power of a plan (and yes, not everything can be planned out!) can be very reassuring when creating a new goal. Not to say that your plan will ever even come into play, but the important factor being that you have it in your back pocket if needed. In the event you needed some extra direction or support, you have a solid foundation to fall back on. New roadblocks and barriers pop up all the time. Facing them with intention and viewing them as an opportunity to grow is a powerful thing - and one that should not be taken lightly! You are forming a new relationship with yourself, one that is balanced and lasting in your perception of health, fitness, and nutrition - you deserve only the best!

You’ve seen New Year’s Goals before - and maybe you’ve seen them come and go. What will be different this year? How will roadblocks and barriers make you stronger instead of break you down? You have the power to set yourself up for success and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!
